Position Summary
The Maintenance Foreman is responsible for leading the day-to-day operations of the maintenance department while remaining hands-on with equipment troubleshooting and repairs when required. This role provides leadership and technical direction to a team of Licensed Millwrights, Industrial Electricians, apprentices, and contractors to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable operation of all manufacturing equipment.
The Maintenance Foreman works closely with Production, Engineering, and the Maintenance Manager to maximize equipment uptime through preventative maintenance, effective scheduling, continuous improvement initiatives, and rapid response to equipment failures.
Here's what you will do:
Leadership
- Lead, mentor, coach, and develop a team of Licensed Millwrights, Industrial Electricians, apprentices, and contractors.
- Assign and prioritize daily maintenance work based on production requirements.
- Conduct daily shift meetings and communicate maintenance priorities.
- Monitor employee performance and provide ongoing coaching and technical support.
- Support employee training, onboarding, succession planning, and skills development.
- Promote teamwork, accountability, and a positive workplace culture.
Maintenance Operations
- Coordinate preventative, predictive, and corrective maintenance activities.
- Prioritize breakdown response to minimize production downtime.
- Ensure work orders are properly assigned, completed, and closed within the CMMS.
- Monitor maintenance KPIs including downtime, PM completion, equipment reliability, and response times.
- Assist with troubleshooting complex mechanical and electrical issues when required.
- Schedule maintenance activities to minimize production interruptions.
- Coordinate contractors during shutdowns and capital improvement projects.
Technical Responsibilities
- Oversee maintenance of conveyors, pumps, motors, gearboxes, hydraulic systems, pneumatic systems, compressors, furnaces, fans, overhead cranes, and other heavy industrial equipment.
- Support troubleshooting of PLC-controlled equipment, VFDs, motors, sensors, and electrical systems.
- Read and interpret blueprints, mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, and manuals.
- Ensure repairs are completed using proper maintenance practices and manufacturer specifications.
- Participate in equipment installations, modifications, and commissioning of new machinery.
- Ensure spare parts inventory is maintained and critical components remain available.
Safety & Compliance
- Champion a strong safety culture throughout the maintenance department.
- Ensure all Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures are followed.
- Conduct safety talks and participate in investigations of incidents and near misses.
- Ensure compliance with company policies, OHSA regulations, and environmental standards.
- Promote housekeeping standards throughout maintenance areas.
Continuous Improvement
- Identify opportunities to improve equipment reliability and maintenance processes.
- Participate in root cause analysis of recurring equipment failures.
- Support Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Recommend equipment upgrades and process improvements.
- Assist with developing preventative maintenance schedules and maintenance best practices.
Education & Certification
- Licensed Electrician or Millwright in good standing (required)
Experience
- Minimum 5 years of industrial maintenance experience within a heavy manufacturing environment.
- Previous experience leading maintenance teams, coordinating daily work, or acting as a Maintenance Lead or Foreman is preferred. Experience as a hands-on leader and mentor to Apprentices and other maintenance staff is required.
- Strong mechanical troubleshooting experience with industrial production equipment.
- Experience supporting Industrial Electricians and coordinating electrical maintenance activities.
- Experience using CMMS systems for work order management and preventative maintenance.
- Experience coordinating contractors and shutdown activities.
- Experience with welding and fabrication is considered an asset.
Technical Skills
- Strong understanding of hydraulics, pneumatics, power transmission, bearings, pumps, conveyors, compressors, and rotating equipment.
- Working knowledge of PLC-controlled equipment and industrial automation.
- Ability to read mechanical drawings and electrical schematics.
- Comfortable using Microsoft Office and CMMS software.
- Forklift certification or willingness to obtain.
- Overhead Crane certification or willingness to obtain.
